STURGES

My name is Bill DONATH. I am president of the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society in Lincoln, Illinois.

I am searching for information on Henry STURGES. Henry was a newspaper publisher in Las Animas County during the 1870's and 1880's.
Henry was editor of The Lincoln Herald from 1859-1862. In 1862 he joined the 7th US ILL INF and served throughout the war with promotions to Captain in the 61st US ILL INF and the 2nd US Tenn. INF. He returned to Lincoln after the war and was editor of the Lincoln Statesman. By 1870 Henry was in Springfield, Illinois. In the 1880 Census he was in Las Animas. The 1890 Veteran's Census and the 1900 Census have Henry located across the state line in Colfax County, New Mexico. He died in Polk County, Oregon, 13 Feb 1904.
The reason I am trying to tack Henry is to find out what happened to a collection of papers he wrote about his experiences during the Civil War. I have 32 of his early letters sent to the Lincoln Herald. I would like to track down the remaining letters/articles he may have written. Do your newspaper collections go back as far as that? Are they available on microfillm?
